About the event
Hokuriku style, also know as Fukui style, is the style of taiko that developed in that area of Japan. The foremost exponent of this style was Kurumaya Sensei, who sadly passed away recently. With his group Hibiki Daiko, he was at the forefront of the taiko explosion that happened in Japan in the 60s and 70s.
In this workshop, we will learn about the distinctive elements of Hokuriku style, such as the mitsu-uchi and shibu-roku ji-uchi, bachi sabaki (twirling of drumsticks), tsubame kaeshi (cross hands) and soloing!
Hokuriku style focuses on improvisation and self-expression, but we will explore these elements in an accessible and fun way, putting them into a song arrangement by the end of the workshop you can take away to play in your groups, or use as a starting point to develop something new!
