About the event

Taiko Gasshuku Alba is a four-day intensive retreat suitable for intermediate to advanced Taiko players looking to take their Taiko drumming skills to the next level. Set against the idyllic backdrop of the Scottish Highlands, the Gasshuku is an opportunity to connect with Taiko players from across the world and immerse yourself in key Taiko drumming concepts under the guidance of world-class instructors. Classes will be held in our base at Dounans, where there is also basic on-site accommodation, and in Aberfoyle Memorial Hall. Both venues are separated by a 10-minute countryside walk.

For our inaugural event, we are thrilled to announce that both Shoji Kameda and Yuta Kato will be the lead instructors. We wanted to make sure the course content encompassed a broad range of Taiko skills, so we have decided upon the following topics: "Lion Chant and Taiko-set concepts", led by Shoji; and "Yodan Uchi and related drills", led by Yuta.

Over the course of four intense days, participants will receive around 15 hours of tuition from each instructor. Each day will begin with a warm-up and stretch, before the 3:30 hour morning session with your first instructor. After lunch, a second 3:30 hour session will begin with instructor number two.

Recommended playing level: At least 1 year of regular Taiko practise, including exposure to Naname style and/or Hachijo. Although we encourage everyone who meets the minimum level to apply and will promote a supportive environment to help you progress, please note that the level will be fairly high, so it will be crucial to have the right attitude and mindset.

NOTE: The 'residential' option includes accommodation from 8-15 April (i.e. including the Scottish Taiko Festival dates)
