About the event
Edo bayashi - ‘Tokyo festival music’ - is a traditional piece for 2 shime, one small odaiko, a chanchiki and a fue. The fue melody is hauntingly beautiful and the percussion is intricate and challenging, all coming together to literally take your breath away. The piece is played in the streets of Tokyo during festivals.
In this workshop you will get acquainted with the piece as a whole, look at the sheet music and learn how to decipher it, get to grips (pun intended!) with the basics of the shime and chanchiki technique, and learn the shime, odaiko and chanchiki parts of a short section. You will also hear about the main carriers of this tradition and where you can learn more about it.
Edo Bayashi bachi are made of very light wood (ideally hinoki/cypress), 32cm length and 18mm diameter. Please bring a pair if you have them, or you can…
